If you already know FMTDTA (and then APIs in general), it's not that bad. The sort APIs are very much like FMTDTA but with more flexibility on what you can send in and get back out, plus the sort specs are dynamic rather than coming from a source file member. If you wish, you can output back to the input file and then read it sequentially and update. But I'd probably output back to a buffer rather than an outfile and write the updated images from the buffer.
