I'm likely missing something here, but why update the sequence number field?
Assuming more than one person at a time is using this file and furthur
assuming these people want it sorted differently, why not simply have a
counter in the program that starts at 1 and increments by 1 for each record
loaded in the selected sequence?

The trouble with creating a temporary file as you suggest is that one must
have an exclusive lock to replace the original and I wouldn't think that
likely. The same is true, I think, for the ADDPFCST approach.

Am I confused?

Given any file with a sequence number field, what is the simplest method to
update the sequence number field to number the records sequentially
based on an arbitrary view for which there is no logical.
