I'm likely missing something here, but why update the sequence number field? Assuming more than one person at a time is using this file and furthur assuming these people want it sorted differently, why not simply have a counter in the program that starts at 1 and increments by 1 for each record loaded in the selected sequence? The trouble with creating a temporary file as you suggest is that one must have an exclusive lock to replace the original and I wouldn't think that likely. The same is true, I think, for the ADDPFCST approach. Am I confused? Donald R.
