Temporary storage due to "runaway query", IFS usage (Web, windows etc),
buggy program looping ...
If it's still growing, try WRKSYSACT and check Allocated Storage column.

Company I work for has a disk/HUNTER tool that detects DASD spikes, analyzes
it and returns who and what the likely culprit is (reports, message to
QSYSOPR).
