I'd like to know where you feel that the ascii/ebcdic issue has been a factor. Is it looking at a packed field with DSPPFM? Don't see a lot of users doing that and most jdbc/odbc/etc drivers handle that. Is it having to switch between binary/ascii when ftping some files? Don't you have the same issues depending on the file type with wintel servers? Is it code page issues? Isn't that still an issue on ascii machines in a multilingual environment? Is it the fact that many shops have left their CCSID at 65535 and when then download data it looks like gibberish until they tell it to convert 65535 data? Do people really want OS/400 on the desk top? I've gotten rather fond of the gui of other clients and, as much as I liked OV/400, can't see going back. I'm confused as to what you are trying to solve here. Once you explain what you mean, then we'll see if that's the cure for the worlds ills. IMHO I read with interest the article about IBM's revenues being announced at COMMON, and how it went over like a lead balloon My guess is that marketing has had a lot to do with the dismal figures, but I also feel the time has come for IBM to shelve it's stubborn adherence to it's EBCDIC machine code, and start swimming upstream with the rest of the Extended ASCII fish. Our loyal Midrange crowd also deserve, the ability to load the latest OS version on our laptops, or desk tops, and not have to continually be dependent on the midrange hardware. If you build it, more will come....
