There's no need to force it to packed - can't anyway. DanB's explanation of second-level text should get you to something, assuming you are getting a message about the mismatch. Can you tell us if you are getting a message, maybe put screen shots in your next post. Mismatch usually means between numeric and character. We need more specifics, I'm afraid.

In SQL you can cast a value to a decimal, which is the same as packed. Just say decimal(number) - you can use optional length and decimal values.
