You could also look at the various QADB* files in QSYS, specifically
QADBIFLD. I have found it much faster than using DSPFFD, and I would
assume that the same would be true of using either QSYS2/SYSCOLUMNS or
SYSIBM/SYSCOLUMNS, I believe that they are the same thing, but SYSIBM is
where JDBC drivers look.

OK, there is a sheepish and shameful grin on my face as I type.  The 
DSPFFD worked as it should.  I was using the DSPF to look at and was 
expecting something more human readable.  When I ran my query on the 
file anyway it worked.  I should know better.
