Did you also try querying QSYS2/SYSCOLUMNS for the file?

OK, there is a sheepish and shameful grin on my face as I type.  The 
DSPFFD worked as it should.  I was using the DSPF to look at and was 
expecting something more human readable.  When I ran my query on the 
file anyway it worked.  I should know better.
