I've been digging around this tuff awhile, so I've picked up little bits along the way. TA, LD, and SR are functional areas of LIC or OS/400. TA is tape, LD is load/dump (low-level names for save/restore), and SR is what you think it is. These are often the 2nd and 3rd letters of object names - do WRKOBJ QTA*, e.g. LD is an exception, as it refers to functions or modules in LIC, not an object we normally can see.

The good news is, only those that apply to your system will be applied when you process the PTF. The bad news is, you need to order the whole thing -- same as cumes, which always have much more than you need.

"520 WebSphere App Server ND V5.0" is the "Network Deployment" version of WAS - these are the PTFs for v5r2m0 of OS/400 that support that product.

I always got HIPER, database (DB2 UDB), Java, & HTTP Server. Get Performance Tools if you have it. And I guess now you want BRMS, et al.

The rest of it is whatever you have installed.

But this is not all - on the Fixes site you should look at the Recommended Fixes. There are things there that I've thought should be in a group - like the telnet PTFs or the print PTFs - but they are not. Others are optional things but useful or needed for certain situations - just saw something that changes CPYFRMIMPF at V5R3 back to act as if at V5R2.

Welcome to the rat's nest.

How does one tell whether they need a certain PTF group? "Work with PTF
Groups" on our v5r2 box shows 4 groups:
  SF99519
  SF99502
  SF99169
  SF99098

However, when I go to the PSP site for group PTFs, there are 19 groups! I
looked at some of the detail and can't find useful references to LPP id's
that would tell you whether you need it or not. I looked at the "SF99085:
520 520 Backup Recovery Solutions" and can't tell if this is strictly for
BRMS shops or what. A snip from the group site:

Description: BRMS, TA, LD, SR and now LPAR Group PTF
  Product: 5722SS1, 572299, 57222BR1

(BTW, that is "sic"; I copy/pasted the above; see the Product:)

We do not have BRMS, however what is "TA, LD, SR"? Is SR = "Save/Restore"?
If so, then that would be everybody, right?

And SF99085 might be an easy one if every shop needs it. What product would
I need to look for to see if I should install group SF99246 (520 WebSphere
App Server ND V5.0)? The detail on that doesn't even show a product ID.

Advice and RTFM links appreciated!
