Is it possible to backup your PC data to an "image file" on your computer
first, then copy the image file to the IFS? For simplicity, use WinZip to
create a ZIP file of the data, then copy that to the 400.

Not to beg the question, but is the 400 the right place to store PC backups
due to higher disk costs, longer backup times, etc?

In looking for a better way of backing up PCs, I looked thru the archives.
Among the possibilities was using the regular windows backup and backing it
up to a file on the IFS, then use a SAV of the IFS to the iSeries tape
drive.  I decided to try it with a backup of my PC that would take approx
1gb.  It bombs on me with the following error:
