It's possible to do this. You could also read a tape produced by another
system as input to a program, including an RPG program, on the AS/400. This
is going way back in time to before terminals were used, but the support for
this type of processing is still there.

Please keep a straight face.
Has anyone ever copied an ISeries flat file to 3490E tape, and then used the
tape as input to a mainframe?  All IBM hardware.  I'm really curious as to
whether a mainframe could read a tape produced by an ISeries.  Both are
EBCDIC, of course, but am wondering about stuff like tape headers, etc.
