I've taken AS/400 disk & tape drives out of their respective housings
and connected the bare drives to PCs. No problems there. The actual
connection between the drive and the 400 is standard SCSI (AFAIK) so
that also shouldn't be a problem. Biggest questions are: 1) Does the
Windows box have SCSI? And 2) What will a 3580 show up as (and will the
Windows backup software work with it)? My guess is it'll work fine.
Worst case, the Windows box just won't recognize it.

INS = File Server I/O Processor (FSIOP) = Integrated PC Server (IPCS) =
current name: Integrated xSeries Server (IxS). Did I miss one? This
thing changes names about as often as PC Support.

Yes, by INS I meant the Integrated Net Server. They were giving them
out almost free when we ordered this box. In comm resources look for a
"File Server IOA" or something like that. Mine is a 2890.

I've never tried disconnecting the LTO from the 400 but I've heard that
it can be done.

Ok, dumb question... Is INS the Integrated Net Server? And how do I
tell if I have it running on the 400? Is it part of the base code?

Forgot to mention: We do not have BRMS. (Saw that mentioned in a few
of the archive posts.)

You can disconnect the LTO drive from the 400 and use it on the NT
server?
Are there specific steps you have to follow to do this? I.e., power
down the tape drive before disconnnect, stuff like that? I assume it
would be much faster to backup directly this way than going through the
400?
