You can't CHKIN an object that doesn't exist (CPFA0A9) and a directory returns CPFA0DA: Object is a directory. The obvious issue is still as Scott Klement pointed out -- you can affect object allocations with these. Given how easy 'stat' is, the only reasons I can think of to actually need CHKIN/CHKOUT are (1) you really need to check something in or out, (2) you're somehow forced to use OPM CL or other language and must go through QCMDEXC/QCAPCMD/etc., or (3) you're somehow forced to use Rexx. QShell gives a likely alternative, but it does need to be installed.
