Hello Rob, 

I didn't know that tape color mattered :-)

It's an LTO-2 200/400gb drive and came with a purple tape, but I think you 
can also use LTO-1 100/20gb cartridge as well. 

Do you know of any way to speed up backups on these babies and force them 
into streaming mode ?

I am looking into UDFS (User Defined File System) usage to see if that 
might speed up backups of a large number of small objects, but IBM has 
very little documentation. 

Any additional feedback is appreciated.

Is that the one that takes the purple tapes or the black tapes?  I've had 
experience with both leading towards what you are talking about.  Let me
