I can't tell you why it happens - but if you place a dummy field in the
result position it will always ask you for input.

Are you sure you tested in identical circumstances?  I know that if I use a
DSPLY from a PDM command line it will always wait, but from many other
points it does not.  If I recall correctly it has something to do with
RSTDSP *YES or something of that nature.  Must be eight + years since I
investigated it - lot of gray cells have died since then!!
