Actually, there's at least one way to send email from an AS/400 that doesn't involve setting up an actual server on the machine at all. You can do it from Java, using an application that uses JavaMail. We do this ourselves, in our Wintouch product, and in our web-installation system. Of course, doing it with Java could easily become more complicated than doing it with the OS/400 SMTP server, depending on how complex a message you need to send. -- JHHL
