This kind of stuff has been going on for years, on AS400's, S/36's, etc.
Just today I happened to be cleaning out an area and found a box of
magazine reprints from ?1988? in which our company was featured doing this
sort of stuff.

Some people do it directly with communication lines,
some, with TCP/IP and perhaps a little socket programming,
and some do it to a PC that controls the device.

We communicate with a PC from our iSeries. We chose that route to allow
the PC to stack them up when our iSeries is down doing saves, etc. Or, if
we are doing some sort of period end processing and we don't want the data
posted during the run of that.

Seekinhg clarification on the Unix-ISeries issues

HI - Perhaps someone can explain what would be some of the issues to
deal w/ in this sit.

A Manufacturing of consumer products wants to put in a process control
package. First of all, is there no AS/400 Solution? What the package
does is it has scales attached to a PC, could be a workstation, on a
Unix based system. This system monitors and provides a truly accurate
record of the Mfg. workers production. This is needed for quality control.
Currently, there is no computerized aspect of this. OK, now the ERP is
AS/400 based. There seems to be this dread and worry about the
synchronization.
How would this work? As a batch system, I would think that there is an
FTP file upload.
Perhaps someone has a very similar first hand knowledge and experience
that they could share ?

Thank you,
Sam
