If this approach will work then when discussing CSV with your 400 guys be sure to mention the CPYTOIMPF and CPYTOSMTF commands. They ought to be able to create a CSV file in a directory that is shared via Netserver with very little effort.

Nice point re CSV - Our A/S400 guys seem to loke to give you a txt file with
header and trailer records looks rather like a printer spool file
--a nightmare to process so I going to be firm and find out why they cant
provide CSV! This will be 10 megs of data collected during day -ongoing

ODBC or OLE DB is much much better-avoiding file management  which can be
error prone
