Back in high school (a quarter-century ago), our terminals were much dumber than any 5250- or 3270-type device, and yet at least a couple (Datamedia Elite 1500-series) had volume controls, as I recall. On the other hand, we had one (a Teletype Model 43 -- very nice keyboard, and [for its time] a very nice dot-matrix printhead) that had an actual BELL! As soon as we discovered THAT, we all started writing gag programs that would simulate a ringing phone. -- James H. H.
