There are two classes of keys that send data to the host: AID keys and attention keys. AID keys include the 24 function keys, the CLEAR key, the ENTER key, HOME when the cursor is already in the home position, and a few others. Attention keys include ATTN and SysRq. The 5250 data stream is quite a bit more structured than a typical ASCII terminal data stream. It consists in large part of "commands" and "orders," which are used to build the display. Any given data stream from the host can consist of anything from a change affecting only a single character position, to a complete clear-and-rewrite of the entire screen. The 5250 hardware is quite capable of scrolling; that capability is, however, not used a whole lot, from what I've seen. -- James H. H.
