You are also missing a BIG point. By referring a question to another list, it is also pointing the person to the group of people that would knwo the most and help him the best. In regards to assuming that is was a PCtech question and had no relevance to miodrange, that fault lies on the shoulders of the original poster. He never once mentioned how he wanted his midrange machine to be included int he process. I do not think that anyone who read the question had any doubt that he was looking for a 100% PC oriented solution. That point also deals with everyone and email lists. People don't always include the important aspects and parameters of their question. As for theamouont of repleis to the "off topic" policing, there were several posts because people felt like they had to defend David's policy and express that they have no issue with it at all. The rules of the list when you signed up let you know it was moderated. It isn;t a secret. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Boling, David E." <BolingDE@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: "Midrange Systems Technical Discussion" <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, December 17, 2003 5:23 PM Subject: RE: email design > I guess I missed the point. > > I just assumed the questioner was seeking a midrange answer from a midrange list and he was told to move it to the PCTECH list. > > Was the point. > > 1) Maybe we should wait before jumping on someone about how their question doesn't belong on the list; > 2) or, that if someone is so concerned about reading a topic that doesn't hold their interest maybe they shouldn't be on a list; > 3) or, that maybe the way to handle an off topic question is to not reply at all. I have also read about bowling, gas-x, the list's change of direction (April Fools msg), etc that weren't really on topic, but I can live with. Given the other banter that goes on, is the stray COBOL, PC or Java question going to bring the world crashing down? Or should we compound the problem by making a mountain out of a mole hill. I use other list as well and have found over the years that most stay on topic because people don't respond to off topic question, which usually is very effective and less chatty. > > > > David Boling > > -----Original Message----- > From: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx > [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of David Gibbs > Sent: Wednesday, December 17, 2003 3:45 PM > To: midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx > Subject: Re: email design > > > Folks: > > I think we've made our point.
