Rob,
when you talk of ibm vs microsoft security fixes, this is
never been about numbers. there has always been a difference
between the exploits of MS systems, like the typical "buffer
overrun, ...can run command of choice..." and the problems
in OS400 and now all the various server programs.
And yes, many integrity problems relate to how websphere, apache
and other new "outside" servers are dealt with.
Many years ago IBM was (imho) just as indifferent about some problems
as MS 2 years ago. IBM had it's wakeup call and over a few
releases fixed the problems. There is no doubt every OS on the planet
will continue to need fixes. Virus writers and top hackers are extremely
creative. MS has just been a lot more defiant in first ignoring the
problem, and now preachy in it's marketing that they "are secure", yet still
has not
gotten beyond the concept that function rules and security is 2nd. Their
software
still dominates the FBI Top 10 Security Concerns list, and the CERT
advisories.
Look at yesterday/todays PR announce about Messenger and the spammers.
MS promises to fix the problem "in some future release..2004", has known
about
the problem for well over a year, and still won't put it in the critical
fixes. They
want that function running for many purposes! (for those not familiar with
messenger, it's MS's version of "phone home", connecting your desktop to
their
servers (which have proven many times to be less than secure).
All OS's have "some weakness". If hackers concentrated on iSeries, we would
see more problems & fixes, same for unix, linux, mainframe, but nowhere near
the ballpark MS is in. Their's is not secure by design.
My customers see it very clearly when the iSeries (including the http
server) stays up and the network servers are down.
