When given such advice it's always best to test with SELECT before you run
the UPDATE.
For example, try
select Substr('(100+ blanks)',1, 100-length(trim(MyField))
)||trim(MyField)
from MyTable
first, before attempting the update.

Update MyTable
Set MyField=
Substr('(100+ blanks)',1, 100-length(trim(MyField))
)||trim(MyField)
Adjust the 100's to whatever length you have.
