I've used something like the following:

update file set yourfield = substr(' ', 1, length(yourfield) - length(trim(yourfield))) || trim(yourfield)

trim(yourfield) takes off both leading and trailing blanks. The substr() is of a literal of blanks that is at least as long as yourfield.
