I do the "log in" method, as well as ping the servers (if allowed on that
particular server).

the "log in" method is the inability to determine whether the network
connection or the FTP server is down. (You could ping a known server, such as
Yahoo, or an internal server, which might narrow down network problems.)

I wish there were a standard way (other than port scanning) to determine if a
service is listening on a particular port - ping a port. Hopefully there is
and I just don't know about it.
