David:

Since I'm no SQL Server expert, it might be no surprise that my experience has
been almost unfailingly bad with it. But I know enough to feel comfortable with
it in many circumstances. The big problem I have with your question is lack of
context.

Basic questions... How big is the company? What other applications? What's the
platform mix, i.e., Win98, Win2K, Active Directory, etc.? What's the IS/IT
group like? What expertise?

Specific example... Is SQL Server already used in any significant way in your
environment? or is this going to be a brand new element in the mix?

A shop that's been running iSeries apps for a few years and has a file server
or two and maybe a PDC to handle the desktops and LAN is one thing. But if
you're already fully supporting WinXP and Active Directory and an Exchange
Server and various SQL Server databases, etc., and a smallish older iSeries is
primarily little more than a back-office database server, then it's possible
nobody will even notice a switch.

All kinds of scenarios and possible good directions to go. Each direction leads
through a minefield, but there are routes depending on where you start and want
to go.
