Thanks, Tom, this is way cool.

The three fields RDVOLL, RDTRL1, and RDTRL2 are all 80-character fields and contain the contents of the respective lablels (except that the latter 2 contain the header label when the file continues to the next tape, I think).

But - HOORAY - I found a treasure trove - DMPTAP DEV(TAP01) TYPE(*HDRLBL *TLRLBL) gives a complete breakdown of the labels - offsets in hex, and lengths determined from number of characters in apostrophes:

'VOL1VOLXXX0 VERNHAMBERGXXX '

which would be RDVOLL, is listed as:

Volume identifier . . . . . . . : VOLXXX Volume Label nbr . . . . . . . : 1
Label length . . . . . . . . . : 80
(0000) Label type . . . . . . . . . . : 'VOL1'

(000A) Volume security . . . . . . . : '0'
(0025) Owner identifier . . . . . . . : 'VERNHAMBERGXXX'
(004F) Standard version . . . . . . . : ' '

'EOF1CUSTLABLSEVENTEENVOLXXX000100010001000032090040620001174IBMOS400 '

which would be RDTRL1, is listed as

File sequence nbr . . . . . . . : 1 Trailer Label nbr . . . . . . . : 1
File label ID . . . . . . . . . : CUSTLABLSEVENTEEN Label length . . . . . . . . . : 80

(0004) File label id . . . . . . . . : 'CUSTLABLSEVENTEEN'
(0015) Mvol identifier . . . . . . . : 'VOLXXX'
(001B) Mvol sequence . . . . . . . . : '0001'
(001F) File seqnbr . . . . . . . . . : '0001'
(0023) Generation/version . . . . . . : '0001' / '00'
(0029) Creation date . . . . . . . . : '003209'

I'm unclear on how DSPTAP *OUTFILE matches up with actual tape labels. Best might be read a few labels yourself (your programs or dumping labelled tapes as unlabelled) and start cross-referencing things you recognize.

See if this gives you any help in deciphering:

I have an old .RTF document from a section of an old IBM MVS manual that describes IBM standard volume labels, but it's pretty ugly when trying to read it in Word 2000.

Searching the Internet, try things like "format+ibm+standard+volume+label+tape".
