We have an E04 that has been up since 1991. The DRIVE (6606) died in it during the first year, and it has not Had ANY down time in the next 12 years, with the exception of 2 office moves. (this box only has one drive, so there is NO RAID or mirroring) We really don't use it for anything any more, with the exception of sometimes needing a v2r3 box to duplicate something a customer might have. We let it sit in our computer room now more to see WHEN/IF it will die. Sadly, we will probably be putting it out to pasture next week cause we need the space in the cabinet it resides in. cjg Carl J. Unix, yes. My FreeBSD servers all run without any downtime at all. My web server http://www.scottklement.com went about 900 days without a single second of downtime before a recent power failure. When the power was restored, it went right back to serving requests. And, that machine is not just my web server, it also does various things with e-mail, some application programs, and services for other domains. My iSeries does not even come close to this level of reliability. We've only had this system for 2 years, and it's already had instability due to software bugs (fixed by PTF, but that required a re-IPL), a drive failure, and corrupt disk objects that meant the system had to be taken down to run RCLSTG. I think the reason people are impressed by the iSeries reliability is because Windows has made us think that an operating system that runs normally without crashing is some sort of miracle. It's not. It's what you should expect. _______________________________________________ This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l.
