I have a 40S with a 7117 expansion, and both 6390 and 6380 drives.  The 40S is a
very near kissing cousin to the 9402-400, and I expect the supported locations
would be the same.

Like you, my 6390 is in location 5, and the CDROM (6320) is in location 6.  I
have the 6380 installed in location 8 (ie the left bay of the 7117 as you face
it).  However, I think it can go in any location from 5 - 9 when jumpered
correctly, and when your ribbon cable is long enough to reach the back of the
drive.

On my 40S, under each drive location are stickers with the jumper settings for
various tape / CD models, including both the 6380 and 6390 on each sticker.

It has been years since I installed my 7117 and made it dual tape drives, but my
recollection is that the MFIOP on the main unit only supported one tape drive
and the CD.  I had to add another card in the 7117 to allow me to add the second
tape drive, and the length of the ribbon cable was such that location 8 or 9
were more feasible for installing the tape drive than location 7.

My machine originally had the 6380 in location 5, but when I bought the 6390 I
put it in location 5 and moved the 6380 to location 8.  The card I bought to
support a tape drive in the 7117 was a 2624, although I don't recall if there
were other options which would have done it.

If your 7117 doesn't have the stickers with the jumper layouts, I can transcribe
them for you or send digital picture or whatever.

But I'm pretty sure you'll need a 2624, or other IOP controller, but then as I
recall it can support TAP02 and TAP03, although I only have TAP02 installed on
it.
