I've been using tabs. They're not commonly found embedded in data, and they convert cleanly back and forth between ASCII and EBCDIC. Of course if you're working with paragraphs of text, tab wouldn't be a good choice. Another possibility is escaping embedded commas or converting them to something else on one side (maybe like "~~"), and back to commas on the other.
