So, this customer wants to expand its horizon?

MMm, the best thing to do is to write a new application in any language of 
their liking from scratch.

 Are they going to support the old RPG application, as well? Or are they 
forcing their installed based to move to the converted "result"? 

Converting RPG to java (for example) will cause its big problems, as others 
have mentioned. And the result will not be compliant to the OO concepts of 
java, methinks.

I worked for a software company once, which had some aplications on the AS/400 
migrated it to VB. You could synchronize the data on both platforms, but that 
was horrible. they made a lot of changes in the data base for the VB side, but 
hardly ever on the AS/400.

Not much to add that other have put, I think David (Gibbs) said it better than 
I could ever do.
