I'm not following all this, exactly. Is the same identical code for MySQL being distributed as BOTH non-GPL and GPL...?? How does THAT work??? Or what? I know there are literally dozens, or more likely hundreds, of sources licenses that have sprung up to deal with this delicate issue in the "Open" Source community. (And, at least to me, this points DIRECTLY to the inherent economic fallacies built into the whole "Open" Source movement.) | -----Original Message----- | From: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx | [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Scott Klement | Sent: Thursday, April 03, 2003 6:11 PM | To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion | Subject: Re: LINUX is the "one" ? .... I never | disagreed with that. | | However, what we're disagreeing about isn't why they placed a commercial | version on their site, but rather *what* constitutes violation of the GPL. | | If you include the MYSQL software as PART OF your application, then your | application MUST ALSO be GPL. If you include the MYSQL ODBC driver as | part of your application, your application must also be GPL. | | However, if you're willing to download and install the software from | mysql.com, or install it as a separate package, then it's not PART OF your | software, and you're okay. | | Sometimes, though, companies want to either add their own improvements | into something like MYSQL and distribute it. Or they want to compile | stuff into their code, and distribute that... if that happens, BLAM, | it's a problem. At that point, you need to buy the license.
