I am not sure what you are looking for. I think you already know about this

My point was that it does not matter how you register a password validation
program, they will be called at the same points in time and in the same
situations. You are not going to solve a Client Access problem by using the
other type of password validation program.

The reason there are two type different call interfaces for these programs
is that we needed a different interface to support long passwords. We could
not change the old interface without causing problems for exiting password
validation programs.
