How big is this flat file? Is he simply dumping the file he's querying on the iSeries or is he running some sort of extraction process that summarizes/reduces the records that SQLServer needs to process? Also, how big is the SQLServer box and how loaded is the iSeries. If it's a SQLServer box w/a Gig of memory processing a 200Meg file for one user it's going to blow the doors off a heavily loaded iSeries processing work for several hundred users. Depending on his reporting needs and the load on the iSeries <flame retardant suit on> it's not unreasonable to use a SQLServer box as a reporting server. <flame retardant suit off> Then again, he could simple be missing an index or two on the iSeries. -Walden ------------ Walden H Leverich III President Tech Software (516) 627-3800 x11 (208) 692-3308 eFax WaldenL@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.TechSoftInc.com Quiquid latine dictum sit altum viditur. When he creates a flat file and sends it to his SQL server, his queries run very quickly. The same query definition, however, run thru ODBC takes as much as 3 times as long. I'm waiting for him to send me an example of the query statements so that I can examine them for the obvious culprits, but can anybody think of anything else?
