Mark,

The IFS has limits also, but they can be fairly easy to get around with
just a little planning. For example, lets say you have a main folder
named /Documents where you want to store your documents. You could create
subfolders like /Documents/2003 or /Documents/2003/January.

Using a system like that should make the limits easy to work with.

In the root file system, I believe the limit is 32,767 subfolders, and
32,767 documents in a folder. I am basing this on what running the
"statfs" command says.

We store text documents as members in a file. Unfortunately we reached the
OS/400 limit of 32767 members and had to move to multiple files. Someone
has now suggested we should re-visit and move all the documents to IFS as
this has no limits. Can anyone confirm that there is no limit to the
maximum number of files in a directory? I've checked the manual and could
find no mention of limits.

Thanks,

Mark Drackford
