Subject: Re: SMS text messaging

Just my two penn'orth as, like Jeff B (hi Jeff), I am based in the UK. I
agree 100% with the other Jeff when he says there's no audit trail and no
urgency on SMS-via-email. I have experimented with this using three or four
different services (chargeable and otherwise) and none of them appears to
have any sort of SLA for the time taken to deliver the message (indeed they
appear to deliver at all only on a best efforts basis). I agree also that
being reliant on the SMTP server being active is not brilliant - although
you're always going to be dependent on *something*, I guess.

That was the bad news. I do have some good news, though.

We have successfully, for automatic SMS messages from some network
monitoring software, deployed an old-fashioned dial-up-to-SMS application
(SMSMaster, runs under Windows) which works a treat and which can be
scripted, etc.

http://www.gcrsoft.com/sms.html

It is very inexpensive, or it was when I bought it (I think a licence was
about £15).

N.B. they even provide information on linking it to an AS/400 (this wasn't
on there when I last looked at the page! - I must have another play with it
myself).

Possible problem with an INS card would be that they don't as far as I know
(any comments anyone?) have the ability to talk to a modem.
