but I haven't heard anything yet.

Yes, it's a long B/L number, all numeric digits.  It's nothing wrong with
LTL/38, it's two "features" of Excel working in tandem:

1.  Text qualifiers in a CSV file are ignored if every character in the
field is numeric or blank.
2.  Excel displays long (> 12 digit) numbers as scientific notation, no
matter how wide you make the column.

The suggestion of the products from Kemetech look like they'll fit our
needs quite nicely.

Hmmm...this would have to be something like a long B/L number (an alpha
field) or a shipment number (FHSN?).  Let me check with one of my guys; I'm
sure we figured out a way to do this (but I might be wrong).
