Performance of AFPDS gets worse the further from the AS/400 your printer is-- that's further across the network. We've printed overlays on our local HP printers with AFP, and it's acceptable (ie no one screams). Remote locations on the end of a comm link have worse performance-- the AS/400 builds a bit map of the page and sends it to the printer. Across the comm link. For every page. Users get -very- antsy if they press ENTER and the printer doesn't start humming immediately.

We've used some iData (?) IPDS emulator boxes on HP printers with good luck. The company also makes custom ROM sets for HP printers, but the external boxes can be moved to other printer brands without problems.
