No, you can use HP by specifying Host Print Transform. You may need to have an *AFPDS device type. I just tried one on a Brother multi-function (HP-compatible) through a Client Access printer session.

What you don't get is performance - IPDS sends a lot of control data down once - with HPT and non-IPDS it has go down for each page - something like that.
