Dear Rick,

If you are at OS/400 V4R5 or later, you can make the following change
immediately. If you are at OS/400 V4R4 or V4R3, you need to add a PTF first.

Edit your OS/400 printer device description by changing your System Driver
Program value from *HPPJLDRV to *IBMSNMPDRV. The OS/400 HP PJL driver
program requires the target printer to support bi-directional PJL including
an ability to respond to the PJL unsolicited status poll. Should a problem
occur within the printer when the IBM server polls it and no PJL response be
forthcoming from the printer, the error condition that you outlined is what
occurs at the IBM server.

All modern JetDirect NIC cards support the Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) by default. Using SNMP instead of PJL to manage the
connection with this particular printer might resolve your difficulty.

HTH

Best Regards,

/Paul
