There are two useful APIs for this situation:

        QTWAIDSP        Aid Spelling
        QTWCHKSP        Check Spelling

These are Office APIs but they are on the system even if you don't have
OfficeVision installed.  They are described in the Office section of the
API section of the (getting close to useful after only 4 years!)
