The "only" ethernet connects I have personally seen, use common
flat 2 wire RJ45 type connections. Even though the wire has four
strands, I believe only two are used. I have "never" made up a
ethernet cable but cat5 is really just another wiring system. I
have used cat5 extensively with twinax terminals and printers.
Only two strands of wire are used.

As I stated very early on, I could be wrong.

100BaseT is a different critter all the way around.
