but is there any performance issue with 55 pointers? forget the program and
maintenance factors for a minute...will it jeopardize the execution of the
order entry program?

Since parameters are passed using pointers, you are going to pass one
pointer or 55 pointers. Makes for an easier decision.

Another idea: use an external file to define your data structure for even
better maintenance...
