It was Service Release 2 of Office 97 which increased the capacity of Excel. It appears to be something to do with the data transfer proceedure - one of my lovely tasks on Monday is to check that everyone is up to date on their Client Access service packs <sigh>. The 16k users don't even make it as far as opening excel, they don't see the point. One of the files in question has 22816 records, which the 64K users can open the whole lot of.
