IBM just sold their HDD manufacturing to Hitachi a couple of months ago.
IBM will still have a stake in the manufacturing, but Hitachi's share will
increase over the years. Currently (as of the new system we received in
July), IBM is shipping Seagate drives.

Go to IBM's storage website and you'll see a link to purchase their drives
from www.googlegear.com. Now, go to googlegear and search for IBM
Ultrastar. Here, you'll see the drives IBM was shipping before they went to
Seagate.

Compare these prices with the list price from IBM for iSeries Disk units.
The prices below are from the Summer 2002 catalog (I know they've reduced
the prices significantly since then...)

18GB 10K:
IBM - 2010
BCC - 900
googlegear - 123
googlegear price for 20 drives (this is a bulk rate) - 2280

35GB 10K:
IBM - 3200
BCC - 1400
googlegear - 202
googlegear price for 20 drives - 3860

So, we have to tack on $1900 for a controller card from IBM for an 18BG
drive (remember that support is a separate fee with the system and not per
drive) and $3000 for a 35GB drive.

Thought it was Hitachi making the drives now.
