The car analogy really doesn't work here because the ignition key, steering wheel, etcetera are built into the price of the car. IBM sets prices for SEU separately from the compilers. In fact, SEU is not required to use CRTCLPGM. If I recall correctly, DFU is included with OS/400 and may be configured to show multiple lines as an editor would. Therefore, it may be used to edit source code. So there is your "free" editor! Now would I like using it for this purpose? No. Is this a more productive method of editing source than SEU or Code? No, but that is why SEU exists and why IBM charges extra. It adds function to the system and increases productivity. Just my two cents as Devil's (or IBM's) Advocate. Donald R.
