Al,

IBM has reinvigorated Code. As you know, it now runs on MS. When they
lowered the cost in V4R5 interest really picked up. When they included it
in the toolset in V5R1, interest shot through the roof. The activity on
the code400 list picked up quite a bit. The support and enhancements from
the people monitoring that list have been outstanding.
Code does not have to be run outside of PDM. Do not confuse PDM with
SEU. They are two different animals. We've added PDM options for
editing, or browsing via Code. What PDM functions do you run from within
SEU?
Or were you trying to compare the Project Organizer with PDM? In my
opinion PDM wins hands down. However that hasn't stopped me from using
Code from PDM.
The days of trying to everything from a single 5250 session are gone. On
my PC I have 6 5250 sessions, Notes, Notes Administrator, 10 browser
sessions, Op's Nav, Word, Code, Code debugger all running at the same time
as I type this letter.

I've been reading this thread, and I have a few opinions:

1). I truly believe that the licensing scheme that IBM is currently
using
cannot be hacked. I could be wrong, but it looks fairly good to me. When
we developed the licensing scheme for TAA Tools, we avoided the IBM stuff
because it was toothless, but we chose to use it in APRM (our new LPAR
management tool).

2). IBM's attempt to transition people from PDM/SEU to code was too
lame.
The initial requirement of OS/2 was the final nail in the casket. The
only
person that I know that can use the PDM like functions in CODE is Phil
Couthart, which speaks poorly for that part of the product. (If anyone
can
use the PDM like functions as well as PDM, please post this.) IBM needs
to
reinvigorate SEU/PDM or put on a push to get people to CODE, but has done
nothing for years.

So very few developers have moved to Code/Flex/Studio and so very many use
SEU/PDM exclusively that I think this will cause widespread hacking of the
iSeries licensing scheme. I don't think there's another licensed program
that more people want and use than PDM/SEU. That includes Client Access.
Look at how many requests we see for free/low cost emulators! People are
willing to leave the IBM fold for everything except SEU.

Here's my rhetorical question: If IBM were to offer support for SEU (say
SQL prompting), paid for by direct subscription costs and not buried in
the
WDSc umbrella, how much would the SEU users be willing to pay? IBM will
probably support SEU if they can demonstrably make money doing so.
