During the Exxon oil spill project, we had to modify our software package
for the company that did the cleanup. Their payroll grew by > 10,000 people
within 60 days, and we found quite a number of duplicates. They also were so
busy getting warm bodies hired that they didn't care that SSN's were being
shared by some of the people showing up to work (try to get a picture in
your mind here that these were not members of Greenpeace or the Sierra
club). The fine from the government that year for "improper record-keeping"
was $250,000. Small potatoes and an acceptable risk, when you consider that
they billed Exxon $750,000,000.
