According to the US Identification Manual, The first three digits are the
originating state code, from 001 - 765 seems to be valid. The next two
digits and the last 4 digits can not be all zeros.

For the first three digits, 700-728 have not been issued since July 1, 1963.
The actual table of issuing states is quite long to post. Call me and I can
fax you the page.

Subject: SSN Validity Checking

Listers-

Does anyone know of a way to check a Social Security Number for validity?
(I.E. - A clerk enters an SSN on a screen and we want to be sure that the
clerk didn't enter '123-45-6789' or some such nonsense.)

Thanks (and yes, it probably should be on the RPG list but I don't
subscribe to that! :-) ),
