Jeff, It sounds like you're raising the 'free-market competition' versus 'centralized control' issue here. There are many times when I get discouraged by the "thrashing" you reference. But then I remember Winston Churchill's quote about democracy, "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried." For the most part, I believe that the development of technology is well served by the free market. The centralized control needs to be exercised by individual organizations as they purchase products. Those of us who implement technology can be our own worst enemies when we follow the bleeding edge too closely. Some need to follow the trends for competitive reasons, but for everyone else I believe that we're better off holding back a little.
