Joe, Your contract with IBM (or the leasing company) should specify if maintenance is required or not. If it doesn't I wouldn't have any problem with sending the machine back with a dead or used drive (it should be all spelled out in the contract). Each piece of IBM equipment is usually listed in their database with a code (something like 21,22,31,32) that tells if it is 1) under warranty schedule to go to maintenance, 2) warranty not schedule to go to maintenance, 3) on maintenance, 4) not on anything. I would think that a call to the support center should get to someone that can tell you what a machine is scheduled for. I know hindsight is 20/20 and IBM should contact you about maintenance but usually it doesn't happen that way.
